The IST Screening (Intelligence Structure Test – Screening) is a short, standardised cognitive test from Hogrefe that is used early in selection processes to assess logical reasoning ability quickly. The test measures three areas and gives both a score for each subtest and an overall Screening IQ (general logical reasoning). Typical test time is around 30–35 minutes depending on the version and setup. The test was developed by the test publisher Hogrefe, which is also behind the IST 2000 R test.
How is the IST Screening test structured?
The IST Screening consists of three subtests:
Each part is timed separately. The effective test time is under 30 minutes, and the total duration is typically around 30–35 minutes including the introduction and examples.

01Analogies (verbal)
Purpose: Shows how you apply vocabulary and recognise logical relationships between words under time pressure.
Task type: Choose the word that correctly completes the analogy (e.g. A is to B as C is to ?).
Example (illustrative): Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : ? → School.
Measures: Verbal reasoning and word relationships, one part of your overall logical reasoning.
02Number series (numerical)
Purpose: Tests arithmetic skills and the ability to identify logical relationships between numbers.
Task type: Find the next number in the series based on the pattern (difference, multiplication, alternating patterns, etc.).
Example (illustrative): 2, 5, 8, 11, ? → 14.
Measures: Numerical reasoning and pattern recognition in numbers.
03Matrices (non-verbal/figural)
Purpose: Reading figure patterns and rules (rotation, number, position, progression).
Task type: Choose the piece that correctly completes the matrix (3×3 or 2×2 depending on the format).
Example (illustrative): Find the missing cell so that every row and column follows the same rule.
Measures: Visual-logical (figural) reasoning without language or numbers.
