About Alva Labs Logic Test

What is the Alva Labs Logic Test?

Developed by the Swedish HR-tech company Alva Labs, the Logic Test is a scientifically validated assessment used to measure General Mental Ability (GMA). It’s designed to assess how quickly and accurately candidates can identify patterns in visual information. The test is non-verbal and language-independent, making it suitable for a wide range of roles and industries.
What kind of questions can be expected?

Structure

Visual matrices (typically 3×3 grids)
Each matrix contains shapes arranged according to logical rules. Your task is to select the correct figure that completes the pattern from six options.

Format
Each question presents a matrix with one missing piece. The challenge lies in understanding the underlying rules — which can involve changes in shape, rotation, symmetry, or sequencing. Attention to visual detail and logical consistency is key.

What to look out for

  • Changes in size or number of shapes
  • Rotation or mirroring
  • Progressive transformation
  • Logical sequences across rows, columns, or diagonals
  • Combining or deduction shapes

Available Languages

The Alva Logic Test can be taken in many languages, but since it’s a visual, non-verbal test, language fluency has minimal impact. Still, it’s good to take the practice test in the same interface language you will use during the real assessment.

Adaptive Logic Test – Explained

The Alva Logic Test is adaptive, meaning the difficulty adjusts to your performance in real time. Each candidate faces a unique combination of questions tailored to their ability level. This makes the test efficient and fair, minimizing guessing and ceiling effects.

Timing

You have 20 minutes to answer as many questions as possible — usually between 15 and 20. Each question must be answered within 2 minutes, otherwise, it’s skipped automatically.

Adaptivity

After each answer, the algorithm evaluates your performance and selects the next question accordingly. Correct answers increase difficulty; incorrect ones lower it slightly. The test aims to quickly zero in on your optimal performance level.

Results and Interpretation

What you get

Once you complete the test, you receive a percentile-based score indicating your performance compared to a large reference group. You’re placed in one of five result bands: Very Low, Low, Average, High, or Very High. Employers use this to assess your cognitive potential and compare it with other applicants.

How to understand it

Scoring is based on an Item Response Theory (IRT) model. You won’t receive a count of correct answers, but rather a relative score that reflects how difficult the questions you answered were. A “High” or “Very High” score means you were able to solve harder patterns than most.

How to interpret it

Employers rely on the Alva Logic score to predict how well you might handle learning, problem-solving, and adapting to new challenges. A strong score is often linked to success in roles that involve strategic thinking, innovation, and complex decision-making. While it’s not the only criterion for hiring, it’s a major one.

Why you should prepare for your Alva Logic Test

  • In a competitive hiring process, preparation can make the difference between moving forward or being rejected.
  • Knowing how the patterns work will save valuable time during the test, increasing your score.
  • Some visual matrices are highly abstract. Familiarizing yourself with them in advance helps reduce confusion.
  • The more you practice, the less nervous you’ll be — improving your concentration on test day.
  • Our preparation sets come with in-depth explanations to common Alva question types, helping you learn the logic behind the patterns.
